Summary
"These poems form a narrative arc, describing the author's life in the 1980s, as a young man from Baghdad caught in the war between Iraq and Iran. A biology student, Kifah entered compulsory service at the onset of the war that would soon define the decade. He spent a year and a half in an active artillery unit... He was taken prisoner, and spent the next eight years, three months, and two weeks as a POW in Iranian prisons. Conditions for these prisoners of war were deplorable, and many of these poems document the state of "dreaming" that allowed him to survive...The last section of the book, Love, can be thought of as a document of what happens after the prison...These poems were written in Arabic, and translated with Kifah's close involvement." -- p.1
