Summary
Inspector Alan Grant is in his very best form in The Singing Sands. He is on convalescent holiday, hoping to restore his brain rather than his body--he is apt to suffer severely from claustrophobia--and, as the story opens, the night train from Euston is pulling into its terminus in the Western Highlands. As Grant on his way out passes down the corridor, he finds the surly sleeping-car attendant trying to shake awake the apparently drunk passenger in B Seven.
