Summary
A mid-twentieth-century widow struggles to manage her farm and raise her children while reflecting on the intertwined experiences of her farm wife mother, her missionary aunt, and a Chinese student whose lives were shaped by the Boxer RebellionWhen 84-year-old Hazel goes into a nursing home in 1999, her children arrive to close up her farmhouse in Edwardsville, Illinois, and find relics of a past they can't fully understand. Told in alternating chapters, the stories of Hazel, Addie, Louisa and Juanlan move from rural Illinois to the far reaches of China and span more than a century. Their secrets, adventures, and rebellions drive them forward as they fight against expectation and follow their passions
