- Summary
-
- The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have eleven days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home. --
- "This is Karina Yan Glaser's debut novel, and her contemporary family narrative preserves the winsome tone and innocence of ... [children's classics about large families] while updating them with a rich, modern diversity of characters, settings and problems. Instead of labeling the cultural or ethnic backgrounds of her characters outright, Glaser plants subtle hints in dialogue, descriptions and names that could suggest a number of possibilities. For example, while we learn that the Vanderbeekers are "a biracial family," Glaser never explicitly says which races. Instead she sticks to eye color, foot size and hair: "Isa inherited her mother's stick-straight black hair, which Isaalways wore in a sleek ponytail"; her twin, Jessie, has "Papa's wild, untamable hair." Oliver has "Mama's dark eyes" while Hyacinth got "Papa's large feet." This technique allows an array of young readers to come to the text and see themselves, their families and friends"--A Warmhearted, Multiracial Update to the Classic Big-Family Novel, NY Times book review, Oct 27, 2017
