Summary
The black lamb referred to was a sacrifice offered up at a pagan rite Miss West attended on St. George's Eve among the mountains not far from the Greek frontier. The grey falcon is the symbolic bird in a celebrated Serbian folk poem. Together, these creatures stand as a symbol of why the Balkans have become the "tinder-box of Europe." The black lamb of the tortured, dark Slav soul and the grey falcon of the invaders represent a land that Miss West has loved and pitied and admired, and which, through the pages of her book, will live forever. -- Book jacket flap
