Summary
Author Barbara Walsh tells three related true stories: that of the catastrophic 1935 hurricane that took the lives of 40 Newfoundland fishermen including her great-uncle "Paddy" Walsh and several of her cousins; the story of her grandfather Ambrose Walsh who emigrated from Newfoundland to New York to start and later abandon his own family; and, finally, the story of the effect that Ambrose's actions had on her father Ronald, her uncle William Patrick (the namesake of the drowned fisherman) and their mother
