Summary
Victor-Marie Hugo was a French poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, human rights activist, and exponent of the Romantic Movement in France. In France, Hugo's literary fame rests primarily on his poetic and dramatic output and only secondarily on his novels; he is oft-times identified as the greatest French poet. When he died in 1885, more than two million people joined his funeral procession to the Panthéon, where he shares a crypt with Alexandre Dumas and Émile Zola. This film uses contemporary drawings and paintings, portraits, maps, and other archival material to describe the social and historical background of his writing
