Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "Doctor Grimshawe's Secret" in 1861 but didn't consider it finished. The book was first published posthumously in 1883 by his son, Julian Hawthorne. Historians believe this novel contains more biogaphical materials than any of Hawthorne's other fiction. One of the themes in the novel is Hawthorne's laying out his ambiguous feelings about his guardian.
